What a "Bad" Klaviyo Spam Complaint Rate Actually Means

Published Aug 8, 2026

If you've checked your deliverability numbers and seen a spam complaint rate that looks concerning, it's worth understanding what the number actually means before panicking — or before ignoring it because it “doesn't look that bad.”

The thresholds that actually matter

  • Under 0.1%healthy. This is where most well-managed accounts sit.
  • 0.1% to 0.3%a warning zone. Not an emergency, but worth investigating before it gets worse.
  • Above 0.3%a real problem. At this level, major inbox providers (Gmail, Yahoo, Outlook) start meaningfully throttling or filtering your sends, which affects deliverability for your entire list, not just the people who complained.

Why the percentage matters more than the raw number

A brand sending to 5,000 people and getting 10 complaints (0.2%) has a bigger problem than a brand sending to 100,000 people and getting 50 complaints (0.05%) — even though the second brand had five times more complaints in absolute terms. Always look at the rate, not the count.

What usually causes a spike

  • Sending too frequently to a list that hasn't been segmented by engagement
  • Buying or importing a list rather than growing it organically — this is the fastest way to see a spike
  • Missing or weak unengaged suppression (see our post on missing flows) — cold subscribers who haven't opened anything in months are far more likely to hit “report spam” than “unsubscribe”
  • A sudden change in sending pattern — going from monthly to daily sends without warming up the list first

What to actually do about it

  1. Pull your suppression segment immediately if you don't have unengaged subscribers already excluded from regular sends — this is usually the single biggest lever
  2. Reduce frequency temporarily to your full list while you diagnose the cause
  3. Check for a recent list import — if the spike lines up with adding a new list, that's very likely your answer
  4. Segment by engagement going forward — send your most frequent campaigns only to your most engaged segment, and taper off for less-engaged subscribers

The part most people miss

A spam complaint rate problem is rarely about the content of a single email. It's almost always a list hygiene and segmentation problem that's been building for a while — the email that triggered a spike just happened to be the one sent when things finally tipped over.
